What Is Decimal Time?
Decimal time (also called decimal hours) writes a duration as a single number instead of splitting it into hours and minutes. Instead of “1 hour and 45 minutes,” decimal time writes 1.75 hours.
The whole number is the hours. The part after the decimal point is a fraction of an hour, so you multiply it by 60 to get minutes: 0.5 × 60 = 30 and 0.25 × 60 = 15. Going the other way, you divide the minutes by 60.
The reason timesheets and invoices use it is arithmetic. 6.25 hours at $40 an hour is 6.25 × 40 = $250.00 in one step, while 6:15 × $40 needs a conversion first. That is also where mistakes come from: reading 7.30 on a timesheet as 7 hours 30 minutes when it actually means 7 hours 18 minutes (0.30 × 60 = 18).
This tool rounds to the nearest whole minute when converting decimals to H:MM, so 1.99 hours shows as 1:59 (1 hour 59.4 minutes). Many systems round time differently, for example to the nearest 6 or 15 minutes, so check your employer's or client's rule before using any figure on an invoice or in payroll.
How to Convert Decimal Hours to H:MM
Step 1: Take the whole number as hours
The number before the decimal point is your hours. For 1.75, that is 1 hour.
Step 2: Multiply the decimal part by 60
The decimal part times 60 gives the minutes. For 1.75: 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes.
2.25 → 0.25 × 60 = 15 min → 2:15 | 3.5 → 0.5 × 60 = 30 min → 3:30
Reverse: H:MM to decimal hours
Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. For 2:45: 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75, so 2 + 0.75 = 2.75 decimal hours.

Legal and consulting billing: Time is commonly billed in tenths of an hour, which is 6-minute increments. Under that convention a 45-minute call is 0.75 hours only if the firm bills in quarter hours; at 0.1-hour increments it falls on 7.5 tenths, so it gets rounded up to 0.8 hours. Your engagement terms decide which rule applies.
Spreadsheets: Excel stores a time as a fraction of a day. Entering 1:30 stores 0.0625 (1.5 hours ÷ 24), not 1.5. To get decimal hours from a time cell, multiply it by 24.
Time-tracking exports: Time trackers often offer decimal hours as an export option for the same multiply-by-rate reason. Check the export settings, because some tools default to H:MM.
Pilot logbooks: Flight time is frequently recorded in tenths of an hour, so a 1 hour 42 minute flight is logged as 1.7. Logbooks in H:MM are also acceptable in many places, so follow your regulator's or employer's requirements.
