Time Zone Map
The contiguous US is cut into four time zones, Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific, by lines that follow county and river boundaries more often than state borders. This page lists the states those lines split, the places that never change their clocks, and where to find a map and live clocks for the five states people look up most.
Reading the Map from East to West
Eastern Time covers the Atlantic coast from Maine to Florida plus Ohio, Michigan and Georgia. Central Time begins roughly along the line through Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and the Florida Panhandle, and covers the middle of the country down to Texas. Mountain Time runs from the western edges of the Dakotas, Nebraska and Kansas to Idaho and Arizona, and Pacific Time covers California, Washington, Oregon and most of Nevada.
Each zone is one hour behind the one to its east, so Pacific is three hours behind Eastern. In 2026 the clocks go forward on March 8 and back on November 1 in all four. The offsets, the abbreviations and the gaps are set out in US Time Zones Explained.
States Split Between Time Zones
These fourteen states are split between zones or follow different rules inside one zone, and the five with their own page link to it. Alaska is covered below the table.
| State | Most of the state | The exception |
|---|---|---|
| Florida | Eastern | The Panhandle west of the Apalachicola River is Central |
| Indiana | Eastern | Twelve counties are Central: six near Chicago and six near Evansville |
| Tennessee | Central (Middle and West) | East Tennessee, including Knoxville and Chattanooga, is Eastern |
| Texas | Central | El Paso and Hudspeth counties are Mountain |
| Arizona | Mountain, no daylight saving time | The Navajo Nation observes daylight saving time |
| Kentucky | Split roughly in half | Louisville and Lexington are Eastern; Bowling Green and the west are Central |
| Michigan | Eastern | Four Upper Peninsula counties on the Wisconsin border are Central |
| Kansas | Central | Four counties on the Colorado border (Greeley, Hamilton, Sherman and Wallace) are Mountain |
| Nebraska | Central | The west of the state is Mountain |
| North Dakota | Central | The southwest is Mountain |
| South Dakota | Central | The west of the state is Mountain |
| Idaho | Mountain | The northern Panhandle, north of the Salmon River, is Pacific |
| Oregon | Pacific | Most of Malheur County is Mountain |
| Nevada | Pacific | West Wendover is Mountain |
The legal boundaries are set in 49 CFR Part 71. Alaska uses its own zone, with the Aleutian Islands west of 169°30′ W on Hawaii time, and Hawaii never changes its clocks. Puerto Rico and the other territories do not change theirs either.
